Muster Success....
The 18th annual Bungendore
Country Music was again an
outstanding success with large
numbers travelling from far and
wide to attend the event.
Considering the drought and
devastating bushfires the
attendance exceeded expectations,
and a record number of campers
made the showground home for the
festival. Many arrived early, and
were treated to impromptu
entertainment by the balladeers
who were also early arrivals.On
the Thursday night Laura Downing
performed at the bowling club and
Darryl Lamb at the Harp Inn, and
attracted good audiences.Friday
night saw the customary Talent
Quest replaced by the Bush
Balladeers Bash featuring the
Drover Music team of Graham
Roger, Bob Easter and Millissa
Bajric. They were supported by
Keith Jamieson, Jeff Brown,
Nathan Charlton, Charmaine Pout,
Anita Ree, and Warren Mahoney, so
the large crowds were entertained
by a top line up of balladeers.
The J.D. brothers performed at
the Harp Inn.
Saturday morning's Bush Poet's
breakfast was again very popular,
so was the village Busking
Competition. Winners were Ron
Bromfield 1st, Warren Mahoney 2nd,
and Frank Turton 3rd.
Saturday's afternoon concert was
at the showgrounds at 3am, and
opened with Charley Boyter's
Muster band, comprising of
Charley, Nev Molloy, Ben Kelly,
and Tony Macklin.
Artists appearing included Tracy
Adams- Parkes ACT Winner, Nathan
Charlton - NSW A.C.T. Showcase
Winner, Anita Ree - A.B.B.A. Bush
Balladeer Star Quest Winner 2003,
Graham Roger, Bob Easter, Melissa
Bajric, Bruce Clarke, Todd
Williams - Tamworth Starmaker
2003, the Bynes Sisters, and
Keith Jamieson. A great
afternoon's entertainment was
provided by all the artists.
Following a brief interval, the
Stan Coster Memorial Australian
Bush Ballad Awards were presented.
The presenters this year were
Terry Bransdon, mayor of
Yarralumla and Toni Dale,
proprietor of the Carrington of
Bungendore, who has been a great
supporter of the Muster over the
years.
With the exception of Evelyn Bury
- health problems, and Julie
Rodger - work commitments, all
Finalists were present.
For some reason the Gordon
Parson's Memorial Award was not
presented this year by Brian
Howard in Tamworth, so Keith
Jamieson made the presentation to
recipient Nathan Charlton prior
our awards.
This year the Bungendore
Committee presented a new award,
a special Encouragement Award in
Memory of Barry Thornton - the
inaugural winner being Ken (Chainsaw)
Lindsay.
On completion of the
presentations, all performed on
the Finalist Concert backed by
the Lindsay Butler Show Band and
presented another memorable
concert.
Sunday's entertainment began at
10am, with Meggan Carswell
singing the Muster Theme Song,
then followed eight hours of
wonderful Australian Country
Music, with not one 'yankee
twang' to be heard. Backing was
again by the Lindsay Butler
Showband, joined by Charley
Boyter on occasions. Artists
appearing included Rick and
Cathy, Jeff Brown, Charmaine
Pout, Ted Egan, Sara Stora, The
Three Generations - Ron, Karen
and Donita Peters (with eight
year old Donita 'stealing the
Show'), Glenn Jones, The
Gunbarrel Highwaymen, Yolande
Gibson, Laura Downing, Shaza
Leigh, Keith Jamieson, and Brian
Letton, with a guest spot by
Anita Ree.
Another outstanding event of the
Sunday morning was when Alisha
Smith of Blackwater Qld
enthralled the audience present
with a stirring rendition on lead
guitar of - "The Old Rugged
Cross" in tribute to the
late great Barry Thornton.
This instrumental had been
Barry's favourite, and Alisha's
flawless performance of the
instrumental, brought Barry
Thornton's brother (who was in
the audience) up to congratulate
Alisha on her performance.
The three winners of the A.B.B.A.
Bush Balladeer Star Quest all
performed at the Muster over the
weekend Dave McCallum, Nathan
Charlton, and Anita Ree. These
wonderfully talented young people
are a credit to themselves and
the A.B.B.A.
The close of the day featured
what has become the tradition at
Bungendore; following Brian
Letton's spot, he was joined on
stage by all the artists who had
appeared over the weekend in
singing 'We've Done Us Proud',
and as usual they had. So
concluded another truly memorable
Country Muster on the 1st weekend
in February at Bungendore
Showgrounds.
