Monday
the 20th of January Tamworth 2003
festival, saw the Tamworth West
Diggers Club (RSL) auditorium
host the Bush Balladeer Star
Quest.
The Bush Balladeer entrants were
of exceptional talent. Finalists
included Kim Williams (Forbes NSW),
Ashley Cook (Thangool QLD) Amanda
Sempf (Taromeo Qld), Meggan
Carswell (Cootamundra NSW), Gina
Briskey (Pittsworth Qld), and
Vicki Walsh (Young NSW), and
Anita Ree (Maryborough Qld).
Before a large enthusiastic
audience, the finalists performed
superbly, giving the judges the
unenviable job of selecting just
one winner, but Anita Ree's
performance left judges and the
audience in no doubt she was the
winner on the day. The trophy was
presented to Anita by Meryl Davis
(Barry Thornton's daughter).
As part of her win, Anita has
since performed at the Bungendore
Muster, and will be appearing at
festivals and concerts around the
country over the coming months
and will also be recording her
winner's single with LBS, to be
released nationally through the
NFS Compilation album network in
the near future.
Anita's musical talent is drawn
from her background, being born
into a country music family,
Anita has been around traditional
Australian country music and Bush
Ballads all her life.
She started singing at home with
Dad and the family as a child and
later on as a teenager in the
local branch of the ACMA (Australian
Country Music Association).
The first songs she chose to
learn were Stan and Tracy Coster songs after seeing them perform
locally and being inspired by
their stories of the Australian
bush and way of life.
Growing up on a cane and cattle
farm provided the ideal
environment for learning her
favourite songs, often
entertaining herself singing
whilst on horseback behind -or in
front- of a small herd of cattle
or on the back of the cane
planter with country tunes
floating through her head.
After singing with others backing
her for several years Anita
decided to learn to play the
guitar for herself so that she
could try her hand at writing
songs of her own. Singing and
music is one of the greater
pleasures in Anita's life and she
enjoys entertaining people at her
shows.
Anita says, "When singing
bush ballads and Australian
country music, I get 'a real
kick' out of seeing the audience
singing along to songs they know".
With a lovely friendly
personality, and a natural
talent, Anita is a young lady
with a big future in bush
ballads, and whilst Anita's list
of achievements in country music
over the past years have brought
her to the Bush Balladeer Star
Quest win, 2003 is shaping up to
be a powerful stepping stone
along the road of continued
success.
The Association assists the Star
Quest winners with support and
invaluable industry knowledge, to
help build the winner's profile
and musical career, via the
balladeers Bulletin and website,
media contact, festival
appearances, and profile/updates/tour
dates/contact etc for the
interest of the media and fans.
Congratulations Anita Ree!
