G'day All,
Tamworth is behind us for another 12
months but if the next 12 months goes as
fast as the last we will be out there again
sooner than we think.
Our shows at the Family Hotel went well -
Thank you to Joan and The Pub Group and the
great sound crew - thank you to Col
Thompson, Anita Ree, John O'Dea and Daly
Stephenson for your guest spots, also to mum
and dad who sang a few songs with us. It was
great to have Dan's son Tom (5Years) make
his Tamworth debut at the Family Hotel -
with 3 generations on stage together as he
sang "When The Currawong's Come Down".
Great to work with Col Thomson again at the
Frog & Toad and The Community Centre, Anita
Ree and I had one show at the Frog & Toad -
Thank you to everyone for your support. The
shows we worked on at the Balladeers
Homestead had large crowds in attendance -
thank you to Phil Coad for a great sound to
work with.
Congratulations to Sharon Smith on winning
Star Quest 2009 - every time she appeared on
stage during the Festival her confidence
grew. Have a great 12 months and look
forward to catching up with you around the
circuit.
Thank you to everyone who voted for "THE
SADDLE" in the People's Choice Awards Best
Bush Ballad - John and I were very
overwhelmed by the win - also thanks to the
radio presenters for giving the song airplay
and to all the people who have purchased a
copy of the CD ‘Borderline’.
From the People's Choice awards it was off
to the TIARA'S and a further surprise when
Mike McClellan and I were announced as the
winners of Vocal Collaboration with " SONG
AND DANCE MAN" (due to work commitments Mike
was unable to attend )
Thank you to everyone including the local
media for all the support and best wishes,
phone calls, emails - it was a very special
feeling to have been given such recognition
in your own home town.
The Golden Guitars remain elusive but I felt
very honoured to have had 2 finalist
nominations in Heritage Song with "The
Saddle" and Instrumental with Stuie French
with "Prissy" - fingers crossed for the next
CD.
Unfortunately Tamworth finished on a rough
note for me as I ended up with Ross River
Fever and was unable to attend Bungendore
Festival for which I apologise to the
organisers and thank everyone for their well
wishes and remedies (some were a bit hair
raising) - thank you to John O'Dea for
performing The Saddle in the Showcase on the
Saturday night - glad you had a great time
on your first visit to Bungendore.
I have a few shows lined up over the next
couple of months - looking forward to
performing for the Endeavour Variety Club
Bash in Ipswich. I will be returning to
Casino on Sat 21st March to perform at the
21st Birthday of Casino Richmond River
Country Music Club where I commenced my
music career at the age of 6.
Until next time, keep it country ,
Matt
PS: While I am writing this report the
devastation in Victoria is being shown on TV
our thoughts go out to the people who are
experiencing such heartache and sadness also
to the people of far northern Queensland who
are experiencing another extreme wet season
- our thoughts and prayers are with you at
this time

NOVEMBER 2008 UPDATE
TWO FINALISTS GOLDEN GUITAR AWARDS 2009!
For
the first time, gifted young bush balladeer,
singer, songwriter and guitarist Matt Manning
is a finalist in the 2009 CMAA Country Music
Awards of Australia – not once, but
twice!
Two
tracks from his third album, Borderline,
recorded with producer Stuie French at Swingin’
Doors Studio in Sydney, have made the finals
in the instrumental and heritage sections.
In
Instrumental of the Year, Matt and Stuie
French collaborated to come up with the
sassy and swinging Prissy, and in Heritage
Song of the Year it was The Saddle, the
John O’Dea-penned song about a farmer
turning from his horse to a 4WD quad bike
that struck a chord with the judges.
“I
was so happy when the album came out, but
this is just the icing on the cake for me,”
Matt said. “To be in such fine company
with all those great artists in the finals
of the Golden Guitars is the ultimate. Anything
else would be a bonus.
“Stuie
knew just how to get the most out of me
during the recording process. He was very
encouraging and supportive all the way.
His creativity is astounding. And I’m
really pleased for Johno (John O’Dea)
too. He’s a terrific songwriter and
The Saddle has become a real crowd favourite
at my shows. It’s funny, but it’s
the first song he ever gave to someone else
to record.”
The
Saddle was announced a finalist at the 2009
Bungendore Stan Coster Memorial Awards,
with John O’Dea the nominated songwriter.
It’s interesting to note in that same
category, there are two others songs about
saddles – A Saddle For A Throne and
Took His Saddle Home.
The
song also secured Matt a finalist berth
in the recent 2008 Southern Stars Australian
Independent Country Music Awards in the
heritage section.
Matt,
23, is a graduate of the 2007 CMAA Australian
College of Country Music and that same year
in Tamworth he secured the TIARA for Bush
Ballad of the Year, with Timeless Country.
At
18, he won the Australian Bush Balladeers’
Association Star Quest and he’s a
Queensland Champion of Champions instrumental
winner.
Winners
of the CMAA Country Music Awards of Australia
will be announced in a gala presentation
at Tamworth Regional Entertainment and Conference
Centre on Saturday, January 24, 2009.

OCTOBER
G'DAY ALL,
Since the release of my CD "Borderline"
in April it has been the most memorable
year of my mus ic
career. With the release of "The
Saddle " as the first single
and the airplay it received from radio
presenters Australia wide I made the
Country Music Charts - a first for
me ( it peaked at No 23). Thank you
to John O'Dea for giving me the song
to record in the first place.
It was also an honour to perform on
the Shorty Ranger Tribute Concert
with The Young Balladeers in Kempsey
to assist to raise funds for the Bronze
Bust which was unveiled a few weeks
ago - congratulations to Ruby, Don
and the hard working committee.
The Young Balladeers then headed up
to Caboulture Urban Festival to a
new venue and some good shows, we
rounded off the short tour a Wagga
Wagga Country Music Festival - thank
you to all the committee for your
support and hospitality - also to
the people who supported our shows
and bought product.
July we headed back to Tamworth for
"Hat's Off" and shows at
The Pub with Dan Manning, Anita Ree,
John O'Dea and Peter Pratt - this
is always a great mid year festival.
Thanks to Joan and The Pub for looking
after us.
On Tuesday 19th August our son "Cooper
Chet Manning " was born - weighing
in a 8lbs 14ozs. Rachel and I would
like to take this opportunity to thank
everyone for their cards, gifts and
kind wishes. Caleb is also enjoying
his role as big brother.
The following week I headed to Gympie
Muster with Anita Ree and Dan Manning
to play on Anita's Ballad Shows -
it was great to catch up with a lot
of mates and country music friends
- quite a few laughs had over the
few days and good weather as well.
Played Springwood Bowls Club with
Peter Pratt, Anita & Dan on Father's
Day - a great crowd in attendance
- I enjoyed my 1st Father's Day.
Nanango Country Music Festival was
another busy weekend - it just keeps
growing - thanks to the organisers
and the people who support these festivals.
September we played in Gawler for
the Slim Dusty Tribute Show - 400
people attended - Amos Morris, Dan
Manning, John O'Dea and a local lady
- mostly a story to these shows -
ours started out bad and got worse,
mum & Dan broke down from Casino
to Brisbane (missed our flight) rebooked
and flew to Adelaide via Sydney -
arrived in Adelaide to find that Dan's
port is still in Sydney but should
arrive by 8.30am next day. 8.30 no
port - desperate phone call to Gina
at Bluedog (who saved the day with
a set of clothes) then on with the
show. Port arrived after lunch. Thank
you to Keith Warren and the committee
for a great weekend and all the tooing
and froing to airports, shows, etc
- we appreciated your hard work.
From Gawler it was back to Broken
Hill for a few days to introduce Cooper
to members of Rachel's family then
off to Mildura Country Music Festival
- always a festival that I enjoy -
10 days of shows and catching up with
everyone and meeting a lot of new
faces. It was an honour to perform
on the Awards Concert and to be nominated
as a finalist in the Heritage Song
Section with "The Saddle ".
Congratulations to Graham Rodgers
who won the section.
A show closer to my original home
base an a chance to catch up with
some of the family - Dan & I played
for Anita Ree at Kyogle Country Music
Social where she launched her new
CD "Story Songs" - good
to see Charlie and all the Kyogle
CM Club members who have supported
my music career since I was 6. Will
try to get down again in the near
future.
I had a great country music night
with West Moreton Country Music Club
at their social in Ipswich (just down
the road from home ) thank you to
the backing band for your fine musicianship
- we didn't get time for a rehearsal
due to work committments - it was
nice to have mum with us too ( having
a few days with us to spoil Cooper).
November 8th I have been announced
as a finalist in NSW Gold Medalion
Awards - Bush Ballad section and to
perform on the Awards Concert. The
Concert/Awards will be held at Butler's
Auditorium - Tamworth 7pm.
November 8th - WaggaWagga - ACRA Awards
- I have also been announced as a
finalist in the Instrumental Section.
"The Saddle" has also gained
a finals berth for John O'Dea in the
Songwriting Section at Bungendore
Country Music Festival in February
2009. Good Luck Mate.
I would like to take this opportunity
to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas
and a Safe and Happy 2009.
Thank you to everyone who has bought
the new CD Borderline - I hope you
have enjoyed listening to it as much
as I did recording it. Thanks to Stuie
for all your input and assistance,
to the songwriters for their faith
in me, the muso's who played on the
CD - to One Stop Entertainment for
your wonderful distribution and lastly
all the radio presenters for all the
airplay - 2008 HAS BEEN THE BEST.
Until next time
Keep It Country
Matt Manning
